There is a new question I keep hearing from business owners and marketers:
“Should we be doing AEO or GEO?”
My answer is: first, let's stop treating them like two competing boxes.
AEO and GEO are closely related, but they are not exactly the same thing. They both respond to a bigger change in search: people are no longer discovering businesses only by typing a query into a traditional search engine and choosing a blue link.
They are asking questions. They are comparing options. They are asking AI tools to summarise information, recommend providers and help them make decisions.
That changes what it means to be visible.
And honestly, this is where a lot of businesses are getting confused. They hear a new acronym, publish a few “AI-friendly” articles, add some schema and assume the job is done.
It isn't.
The better question is:
AEO vs GEO: the short answer
Be the answer.
Make information easy to understand, extract and use when someone asks a question.
Be the source worth mentioning.
Build the brand evidence, expertise and context that support AI-generated responses.
First, what is AEO?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimisation.
The easiest way I explain it is this: traditional SEO often asks, “How do we help this page appear for a search?”
AEO adds another question:
“How do we make the information on this page useful enough to become part of an answer?”
That means writing in a way that clearly answers real questions. It can involve definitions, concise explanations, structured information, FAQs, comparisons, steps, examples and supporting evidence.
Notice what I didn't say.
I didn't say, “Write short answers because AI likes short answers.”
That is too simplistic.
A good answer can be one sentence, a table, a detailed explanation or a complete guide. The format should follow the question.
AEO is about answer clarity
Understand what the person is actually asking.
Give a direct, accurate response before unnecessary complexity.
Explain the conditions, exceptions and examples that make the answer useful.
Support important claims with experience, proof and trustworthy information.
Then, what is GEO?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation.
This is where the conversation gets wider.
Generative AI systems don't simply return a list of pages. They can synthesise information from multiple sources and produce a response in their own words.
So the question becomes less like:
“Can I rank this page?”
and more like:
“When an AI system builds an answer about this topic, is my business or information likely to be understood, trusted and represented accurately?”
GEO therefore puts more emphasis on the broader information environment around a brand: its website, expertise, reputation, mentions, consistent facts, useful content and the relationships between all those signals.
AEO vs GEO: what is actually different?
Here's the distinction I find most useful.
| AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary focus | Making answers clear and useful | Improving visibility and representation in generative responses |
| Main unit of work | Questions, answers and content sections | Brand, topic, evidence and information ecosystem |
| Useful for | Definitions, FAQs, how-to queries, comparisons and direct questions | Recommendations, summaries, brand comparisons and broader AI-assisted research |
| Content priority | Clarity, structure and direct usefulness | Depth, authority, consistency and contextual relevance |
| Success question | “Did we answer the question well?” | “Can the AI system understand and represent us correctly?” |
But don't get too attached to the labels.
In a real project, these activities overlap. The same high-quality page can support both AEO and GEO.
Think of AEO as the answer layer—and GEO as the context layer
This is the mental model I would use if you want to remember the difference without memorising another marketing definition.
Imagine someone asks an AI tool:
“Who are some good digital marketing agencies for a healthcare business in Coimbatore?”
An answer-focused strategy helps the system find useful information about healthcare marketing, the problems involved and what makes an agency suitable.
A generative visibility strategy goes further: it helps create a consistent body of information that makes your agency's expertise, location, services, experience and relevance easier to understand.
One supports the answer.
The other strengthens the context around the answer.
Why this matters for businesses in 2026
Search behaviour is becoming more conversational.
A customer might still search Google normally. But they may also ask an AI assistant:
- “Which agency can help a hospital improve local visibility?”
- “What should I check before choosing an SEO agency in Coimbatore?”
- “Compare these three digital marketing companies.”
- “What is the best way to market a textile business online?”
- “Which SEO agency has experience with education businesses?”
These aren't simply keyword searches.
They are decision-making questions.
And decision-making questions require more than keyword placement. They require information that is clear, credible and connected.
The real foundation: your business needs to be understandable
This is probably the most important part of the entire article.
Before worrying about whether an AI system will mention your business, ask whether your own digital presence tells one consistent story.
If one page says one thing, another page says something slightly different and your external profiles contain a third version, you're creating unnecessary ambiguity.
AI search doesn't magically fix unclear brand information.
It makes the need for clarity more obvious.
What should you actually do for AEO and GEO?
Now we get to the useful part.
If I were building this into an existing SEO strategy, I would not create a completely separate “AI content department” and start publishing random articles.
I would strengthen the foundation first.
Map real questions
Find the questions customers ask before, during and after they consider buying.
Build useful answers
Create pages and sections that answer those questions directly and completely.
Strengthen topical depth
Connect related articles, service pages and industry resources into a logical information system.
Show real experience
Use projects, examples, author expertise, observations and evidence instead of generic claims.
Build external context
Earn relevant mentions and maintain consistent information across credible places where your business appears.
Where does traditional SEO fit into this?
Right in the middle.
This is another place where I think businesses make the mistake of thinking they need to “leave SEO behind” because AI search has arrived.
No.
Your technical foundations still matter. Your website architecture still matters. Your content still matters. Your internal links still matter. Your authority still matters.
The difference is that the destination is becoming broader.
Instead of only asking:
“How do we get the click?”
we also need to ask:
“How do we become part of the customer's research and decision process?”
That is why I see AEO and GEO as extensions of a strong search strategy—not replacements for it.
What AEO and GEO are NOT
Not keyword stuffing
Repeating “best AI-friendly agency” does not make a brand authoritative.
Not fake reviews
Manufactured reputation is not a sustainable visibility strategy.
Not AI spam
Publishing hundreds of thin AI-generated pages creates noise, not expertise.
Not a guaranteed citation
No legitimate strategy can promise that an AI system will recommend a particular business.
A practical example: a Coimbatore healthcare business
Let's make this real.
Imagine a multi-speciality healthcare business wants to become more visible when people ask AI systems healthcare-related questions in Coimbatore.
I wouldn't start by publishing 100 generic “AI SEO” articles.
I'd start by documenting what the business genuinely knows.
- What services and specialties does it provide?
- Which patient questions come up repeatedly?
- What locations does it actually serve?
- What makes its approach different?
- What experience and qualifications can be demonstrated?
- Which educational resources would genuinely help patients?
- Which organisations, publications, professionals or communities already reference the business?
Then we'd build useful content around those realities.
That's where AEO and GEO stop being buzzwords and become an actual content strategy.
How to measure whether you're moving in the right direction
This is still an evolving area, so I would be careful with anyone promising a perfect “AI visibility score”.
Instead, look at several signals together:
The biggest opportunity is not “ranking in ChatGPT”
I want to end with this because it changes the way you think about the entire subject.
Don't build your strategy around the hope that one AI platform will mention your company.
Build a digital presence that is so clear, useful and well-supported that being mentioned becomes a logical outcome of the information ecosystem you're creating.
That means your website explains the business properly.
Your content answers real questions.
Your experience is visible.
Your industry knowledge is documented.
Your local relevance is clear.
Your external reputation supports your claims.
And all of it connects.
That's the distinction I'd keep in your head.
And if you're already investing in SEO, you don't need to throw that work away. You need to evolve it.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO focuses primarily on making content useful and clear for answer-oriented search experiences, while GEO takes a broader view of visibility in generative AI responses, including brand context, expertise, consistency and external evidence.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AEO builds on strong SEO fundamentals. Technical accessibility, useful content, site structure, relevance and authority remain important foundations.
Is GEO the same as ranking in ChatGPT?
No. GEO is a broader optimisation concept. AI systems can generate responses from multiple sources, and there is no legitimate method that guarantees a business will be recommended in every response.
Should a small business invest in AEO and GEO?
If customers increasingly research the business category through conversational or AI-assisted search, strengthening clear answers, topical expertise and trustworthy brand information can be a sensible extension of an existing SEO strategy.
What should I do first for AEO and GEO?
Start with real customer questions, improve the pages that answer them, make your business information consistent, document genuine expertise and connect related content into a strong topical structure.
